Caregiver Self-Care Presentation

Caregiver Self-Care Presentation

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to present Caregiver’s Self-Care to the caregivers at one of my favorite ALF’s. It was a pleasure to present to an audience of caregivers I have met in a different capacity as a Hospice Social Worker and provide them with necessary tools to maintain balance while providing care. The session was followed by a guided imagery and mediation exercise.

The stress a caregiver endures is tremendous. Oftentimes, caregivers neglect themselves to ensure their loved ones are provided the best care. It is very important for anyone who is providing care to also remember their own care is just as important. In today’s society, individuals providing care are younger, have more responsibilities with less resources and support than previous decades. These variables are a catalyst for stress that oftentimes result in health issues including mental health when left untreated. It is important to know the signs and be mindful of your body.

Some common symptoms of caregiver stress include: tearfulness, irritability, insomnia and guilt. The individuals displaying these symptoms are working nonstop providing care while managing families and careers. They have many responsibilities and are overwhelmed with their circumstances. The symptoms manifest into physical and mental health issues causing the caregiver to breakdown. Some of the physical health issues can be in the form of muscle tension, back & shoulder pain and stomach discomfort.

Typically, physical health issues are associated with mental health issues. Chronic stress can lead to depression. When one feel stressed they can have muscle tension, insomnia and lack concentration among a list of other symptoms. It is important to seek help when stress is affecting your daily life. So…when should you seek professional help? One should seek professional help when: feeling overwhelmed, have issues understanding their grief/stress, find themselves ineffectively coping with stress (i.e. self-medicating, incontrollable anger), feeling extremely irritable/agitated and when their health starts to diminish. Mental Health professionals can help individuals identify underlying issues and assist with restoring balance and overall life fulfillment. Knowing the signs of chronic stress and seeking regular treatment which includes establishing routine coping skills[1] are key to mental wellness. Your Favorite Therapist is available to assist you in being the best caregiver to your loved ones while helping to maintain sufficient mental wellness.
