SISTUH’s National Conference Presentation

SISTUH’s National Conference Presentation

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, I had the honor and pleasure of presenting at the SISTUH’s, Incorporated National Conference. SISTUH’s is an acronym for Strength, Initiative, Spirituality, Tenacity, Unity, Health and Substance. SISTUH’s promote sisterhood and growth through knowledge of self. During the conference, I presented during the (H)ealth portion and the ladies participated in great dialogue about Black Women & Mental Wellness.

The conference participants were presented with common mental health disorders plaguing African American Women, stigma associated with mental illness and violence and its effect on the community. Participants also gained awareness of coping skills to increase self-care practices [1].  The participants engaged in dialogue about challenges faced and interventions to utilize during times of need. The effects of mental illness on health in African American women were discussed. African American women have a 40% chance of developing heart disease/stroke which is the highest amongst any race and/or gender and is the leading cause of death. The chance of heart disease and other related illnesses can be attributed to mental illness and its effects on the body. The ladies learned how stigma has plagued the community and stifled the communication regarding mental illness which causes shame and guilt. It was my goal to raise awareness of mental health by presenting mental illness in real life scenarios and its manifestations.

The feedback from the conference has been tremendous and I am truly humbled. I want to express my gratitude to the organizers, members and Assistant Directress of Administration, Tequeda Patterson for inviting and welcoming me into the Sisterhood at SISTUH’s, Incorporated. I am truly grateful to serve my community, raise awareness of mental health and break the stigma of mental illness.
